The final Piston Cup race is underway and the favorites to win, tied on points by the leaders, are: veteran and seven-time champion Strip Weathers (The King), his constant pursuer Chick Hicks and rookie sensation Flash McQueen.
McQueen managed to gain a huge advantage, but by refusing to change his tyres at the last stop, two of them blew out and the race ended in a triple draw with Chick and the King. After a trade session with his sponsor Rust (who McQueen doesn't like, as he dreams of Dinoco, the 'King's' sponsor), the officials decide that the tie-breaker will be held in Los Angeles, a week from today.
Desperate to get there as soon as possible, McQueen forces his transport truck, Mack, to drive all night without rest. As a very tired Mack travels down the road, he immediately falls victim to a group of criminals (Boost, Wingo, DJ and Snot Rod) who cause him to fall asleep on the road and start pushing him around, forcing McQueen to pull out of the trailer.
Just as McQueen wakes up in the middle of traffic, lost and panicked, he decides to look for Mack, but in doing so and having no light, he ends up getting lost and ends up accidentally on Route 66, arriving in a forgotten town called Radiator Springs. After a chase with the town's sheriff, McQueen ends up accidentally destroying the town's main street and is arrested.
The next day, with the help of a crane called Mate, he is taken to traffic court to stand trial. Upon seeing him, local judge and doctor Doc Hudson wants him out of Radiator Springs immediately, but through the arguments of the prosecutor, Sally Carrera, Doc decides to change his sentence to fixing the street as a community service.
McQueen tries to hurry after hearing on the radio that his rival Chick Hicks in California is impressing Dinoco. But in doing so, he ends up leaving the street worse than he did, then Doc appears telling McQueen that the deal was to repair the damage he caused. Not to make things worse and orders him to get everything back on track and start working again, but McQueen tells him he's not a bulldozer and he's a racer, so Doc decides to challenge McQueen to a race.
If McQueen wins the race, Doc will fix the street and he will be released from the sentence and can leave. On the other hand, if Doc wins, he will do it his way. Confident that he will win easily, McQueen accepts the challenge. When the race begins, McQueen speeds up completely taking the lead, however Doc not in the mood to run decides to calmly go and take Mate with him.
Meanwhile, McQueen reaches the last corner thinking he would win, but his lack of experience on dirt tracks eventually betrays him and because of this, McQueen loses control and ends up crashing into a cactus field. As a result, Doc wins the race he used to know, but not before humiliating McQueen further and ordering Mate out of the cactus field, only to be forced to start the job again.
