During the journey, things get complicated as the count's envoy tries to rape Ragnar's wife Lagertha, and in defending herself she kills him. To protect her, Ragnar declares himself guilty and is tried by Haraldson, but the testimony of his brother Rollo exonerates him of the crime.
Count Haraldson visits a visionary to find out what his destiny has in store for him, but each time the same answer is given: Ragnar is his deepest nightmare! Then the Count launches an attack on Ragnar's farm, and he is badly wounded but does not die. He goes to his friend Floki the carpenter to slowly recover, but while he is recovering, he learns that his brother has been taken prisoner and tortured to find out where he is.
Ragnar sends his friend Floki to challenge Earl Haraldson to a duel, knowing full well that if the Earl refuses the fight, the shame will haunt him forever... At first Haraldson disagrees, but later accepts the challenge, facing his destiny and decides to fight him.
After a short but intense fight Ragnar kills Count Haraldson and is recognized as the new count and consequently receives the oaths of his subjects, one of the oldest of whom asks him to accompany him in his plundering and thus have the possibility to die as a warrior, a request that he finally accepts and offers to take him on his next journey when summer arrives. Moreover, his wife tells him that she is expecting another child, which makes him very happy.
A few months later, Ragnar and his men return to Northumbrian, and after a long fight against the Anglo-Saxons, they take Lord Athelwuf, the brother of King Aella, as a hostage in order to get a good reward, but they will fall into a trap set by the king. But Ragnar is too clever and defeats them in a fierce battle from which few Saxons will survive. Rich with treasures and victories, he returns to Kattegat and learns that his unborn child is no longer what fills him with anger against the gods.
Soon after Ragnar and his family arrive at the temple in Uppsala to find out more about his destiny, he asks Odin to help him understand what is happening around him. King Horik of Denmark also comes to the festivities and meets Ragnar, after mutual compliments, Ragnar offers his loyalty to the king.
He explains his ambition to send large groups to the west to plunder but also to explore other lands, outside the Saxon kingdoms, which is what Athelstan the Christian monk told him: this is why Ragnar cannot sacrifice him and it is Leif, one of his best friends, who takes his place.
After some missions, commissioned by King Horik, to finish a negotiation he is not allowed to, Ragnar sends Floki and his men to seek his approval and in the path of the ash tree, they meet a woman named Auslaug of perfect beauty. They will meet under the tree of ashes, the Yggdrasil, the world tree where Odin hung himself for nine days and nights to find runes of knowledge.
After this meeting, they give birth to the first son they have in common, everything goes wrong and Rollo his brother confronts him. When Ragnar's wife Lagertha learns of the events, she abandons him and her son Bjorg. Many years later life has changed, the village has recovered from a plague epidemic, Ragnar has had more children with Auslaug.
