ELK Studios: the Swedish workshop behind Wild Toro and Pirots

ELK Studios is a Swedish online slot studio based in Stockholm, owned since December 2021 by the American group Light & Wonder, formerly Scientific Games. The name nods to the elk of Scandinavian forests. Its fame, though, rests on a fighting bull called Wild Toro and on a gang of pirate parrots, the Pirots. Don't expect blackjack or a live dealer here, because ELK is one of the studios that live on video slots alone. Everything happens on reels, from retro three-reelers to grids eight rows high.

Its operating company, ELKAB Studios AB, was registered on 3 September 2012, although the studio dates its founding to 2013. The breakthrough came with Wild Toro, released in November 2016 and crowned Game of the Year at the EGR Operator Awards 2017.

The official library now holds 158 titles, all playable in demo mode. Two home-grown ideas have caught on: X-iter for shortcuts into the bonus and CollectR for characters that collect symbols.

Where can you find a regulated ELK Studios online casino?

A Stockholm studio built for mobile

On its careers page, ELK Studios presents itself as the first Swedish studio founded with a clear ambition, delivering quality casino games on mobile. In the early 2010s, that promise had real swagger. Kaiju still bears the mark, with a “designed for Mobile First” label and a grid built for a phone held upright, its reels stretching upwards.

In 2016, investor Transferator raised its stake to 11.7% and described a start-up of fifteen employees, founded by Swedish entrepreneurs steeped in the gaming industry. The first titles were called Electric SAM, Taco Brothers, Champions Goal and The Lab. ELK's British game supply licence dates from 19 March 2015.

On the maths side, ELK relies on a proprietary modelling system inspired by the famous Drakon-C language, the careers page explains, and that same page links to a puzzle. The challenge was to free the people ruled by Grimdoom the Dragonlord, illustrated with images of an Amiga 500, a Commodore 64 and other retro computers. A first hero has already solved it. The official Wild Toro page adds that 17 million spins were played and studied before release.

The teams work at Mäster Samuelsgatan 56, right in central Stockholm, the address listed in the Swedish licence register. The registered office is at Vasagatan 16. The motto on the About page fits in four words, “Our passion is slots”. ELK has never strayed from it.

A Light & Wonder subsidiary since December 2021

On 1 December 2021, Scientific Games announced it had completed the acquisition of ELK Studios, without disclosing the price. ELK's games were already live with operators through the OpenGaming platform inherited from NYX, and the buyer promised to let the team keep developing its games independently. According to the iGaming Business report on the deal, the goal was to strengthen its position in the UK and Europe, then roll the games out in North America. It would still take more than two years for them to reach the United States.

The buyer has changed its name since then. The Las Vegas group that bought ELK in late 2021 has been called Light & Wonder since April 2022. On paper, the little Swedish elk now belongs to a gaming giant.

ELK shares the pen with other workshops. The list of subsidiaries attached to the group's 2025 annual report still includes ELKAB Studios AB and ELK Studios Malta Ltd, alongside the Australian studio Lightning Box and the NextGen Gaming subsidiary. It also names two Content Media companies, a name that appears in the address of the server that streams ELK's demos.

For investor Transferator, the bet paid off handsomely. Its subsidiary Transferator Ventures AB sold its entire stake in December 2021 for SEK 110 million gross, according to its 2021 annual report. On top of that came earn-out payments tied to results from 2022 to 2024, capped at around SEK 60 million.

The three founders left the company after the acquisition, according to the trade publication 5 Star iGaming, which presents Robin Smith as CEO since May 2024. A former Product Owner and then Chief Compliance Officer, he succeeded Filip Säfbeck. Säfbeck's departure from management was only entered in the Swedish register on 15 October 2024.

Stockholm and the Swedish slot industry

ELK did not grow up in a desert. Sweden has produced a whole generation of slot studios, and several of them were bought by major groups. The Swedish pioneer that joined Evolution in late 2020 remains the best-known example, ahead of the Quickspin studio, bought by Playtech in 2016. ELK followed the same path five years later.

The younger generation is no exception. The country's fiercest slots come from a studio that came under Evolution's wing in August 2022, fond of horror and high volatility. Other, more discreet Swedish workshops appear in my Kynox directory of slot providers. Next to these neighbours, the Stockholm parrots chose cartoons over horror.

Stockholm has also produced payment methods you will find in casino cashiers. The fintech born in Stockholm in 2019 and the Swedish payment solution launched in 2012 are two examples. Whether they are available still depends on each operator.

Accounts that quadrupled in five years

The accounts tell a story of fast growth. Those of ELKAB Studios AB, filed with the Swedish companies register, can be viewed year by year on the aggregator Ratsit. Amounts are in millions of Swedish kronor (MSEK).

Revenue has more than quadrupled since 2020, with a net margin of 39% to 46% depending on the year. In 2025, sales grew by only 8%, profit dipped slightly and headcount jumped from 116 to 142. The studio is hiring the way a player doubles their stake, and it remains to be seen whether the 2026 wave of releases pays off.

ELK Studios licences and regulated markets

ELK Studios does not run any casino. It supplies its games to operators and must therefore hold a B2B supplier licence in every regulated market that requires one. The table brings together the authorisations linked to a public register. The other markets are covered further down, based on the studio's own announcements.

The British register lists no regulatory action against the company, neither a warning nor a fine. Upstream, the games go through recognised testing labs, Trisigma and Gaming Laboratories International, according to ELK game data sheets. This double lock is no substitute for checking the operator.

According to the studio's announcements, Italy came on board in January 2021. An Italian-language page states that ELK's API covers “gran parte” of the local regulatory requirements. Greece followed in June 2021, backed by a Hellenic Gaming Commission licence. A Spanish-language page addresses operators and introduces ELK as their “nuevo proveedor de juegos de casino”, without mentioning any Spanish licence.

New Jersey opened the American chapter in April 2024, with Wild Toro, Cygnus, the Gold series, Nitropolis and Pirots leading the line-up. Ontario took a seat at the table on 1 April 2025 with seven titles, including Katmandu Gold, Nitropolis and Cygnus. Michigan joined the game in November 2025.

The ELK Studios game library in numbers

158 titles and new ELK Studios releases every two weeks

ELK Studios' counter stops at 158 titles, each with a demo button. Behind that total, the Games page on the official site hides 156 distinct games, because Pirots 4 comes in three versions that share a single technical ID. The original version sits alongside Frozen Fury and Inferno.

The sitemap lists 165 addresses, including a few event pages and early relics such as The Lab, Champions Goal and the development diary for Hidden. The pace has clearly picked up, as the release announcements in the News section show.

With two releases a month on average, the workshop is running at full speed. Propaganda 2, the next new game, is due on 22 October.

Sagas rather than one-off titles

ELK's signature lies in its franchises. Each saga unfolds over several seasons, with recurring characters, cutscenes and opening credits worthy of a Saturday morning cartoon.

The last chapter of the Gold saga that wasn't

In July 2023, ELK presented Valhall Gold as “The Final Chapter”. To reach the treasure of Valhalla, adventurer Kane Steele had to sacrifice his life. Curtain. Except that in June 2025, an announcement headlined “The GOLD Saga continues” launched Elysian Gold. Kane, stuck in Valhalla, now looks for the road to the Elysian Fields. In March 2026, he was back as a samurai in Bushido Gold. In Stockholm, death is just a respin, one more free spin of the reels. The Elysian Gold page now returns a 404 error, and the game has left the library.

From three-reelers to expanding grids

ELK does not only build giant grids. A Classic series pays tribute to land-based machines, from Route 777 to Ivanhoe and from Win Win to Toro 7s, a repertoire Light & Wonder knows well through its English slot maker Barcrest. Anyone who misses classic three-reel slots on screen will feel at home there, with modern features thrown in. In the Zone, released on 1 April 2025, extends that spirit with a brass three-reeler that the studio compares to a Buick GNX, tame on the outside and furious under the hood.

At the other end of the scale, ELK piles up grids that grow, symbols that slide and clusters, groups of identical symbols that burst to let the next ones drop. None of the 156 demos declares a progressive jackpot in its configuration. Jackpot hunters should look instead at the studios that make progressive jackpots their core business. At ELK, big wins come through multipliers, up to 50,000 times the stake on Grizzly Stampede or Nitropolis 5.

One last curiosity is Crescendo, released on 7 October 2025. The game deals five cards in a row, and an inventory of features boosts the winning poker hand with multipliers and wilds, the jokers that stand in for other symbols. If you want the strict rules of Jacks or Better, you are better off with dedicated video poker providers. Crescendo remains a slot, with its bonus game, its super bonus and a maximum win of 25,000 times the stake.

ELK Studios' signature mechanics

Five X-iter shortcuts at a premium price

X-iter is ELK Studios' feature buy menu, launched in 2021, which offers up to five paid modes to jump straight into the action. It all started with a classic bonus buy, introduced on 1 December 2020 in Katmandu Gold, then added to Nitropolis in January 2021. In February 2021, Bompers debuted X-iter as an exclusive with one operator, ahead of its general release on 2 March.

ELK sums up the idea in a single line, “The grind is gone”, which heads its presentation. The X-iter page promises guaranteed features in the base game, spins with rising multipliers or direct entry into a bonus. In late October 2021, X-iter won Game Innovation of the Year at 5 Star iGaming's Starlet Awards.

Meanwhile, the price of the top modes has climbed over the years. At launch, trade outlet SiGMA described modes costing 25 to 300 times the stake. In the Pirots 2 demo, the five modes now cost 3, 10, 25, 100 and 500 times the stake. The game rules state that an X-iter mode can cost up to €50,000 at the maximum bet of €100.

Of the 114 demos that offer a feature buy, 92 cap it at 500 times the stake. Seventeen titles, all released in 2025 or 2026, are a little more restrained with a maximum of 250 times the stake. The remaining five show other caps. The trend is heading the right way, but the shortcut remains a luxury product.

The collecting birds of CollectR

CollectR is ELK Studios' collection mechanic, launched on 7 March 2023 with Pirots, without paylines in the usual sense. Four parrots move around a 5 × 5 grid that can expand to 8 × 8, picking up symbols of their own colour square by square. Special symbols expand the grid, upgrade or transform gems and hand out coins.

Pirots 2 pushed the idea further on a 6 × 6 grid, also expandable to 8 × 8, and the gamble paid off. The game won Slot of the Year at the CasinoBeats Game Developer Awards in Malta in May 2024, according to the winners list published by the organiser. Dinosaur eggs hatch at the end of a spin, and a MAX WIN coin pays out in one go whatever is missing to reach the maximum win.

The mechanic then spread to Dam Beavers, Rogue Rats of Nitropolis and Spark of Creation. With Huff N' Puff CollectR, released in April 2026, it moves into a series of land-based slots from Light & Wonder, ELK's parent company. Builder pigs and a wolf replace the parrots, and the group recycles a family franchise along the way.

Pirots 5, released on 23 July 2026, sends the parrots off to the lost city of gold. The adventure plays out across three worlds, Cursed Temple, The Kraken and City of Gold. Each has its own opponent, from the mummy to the shaman by way of the land crab. Beaten in a duel by a bird, the enemy leaves a feature symbol behind. Nine tokens are hidden across these three worlds, and collecting them permanently unlocks the boss's castle, with progress saved whatever your bet level.

A small aside. Launch the Pirots 2 demo and watch its opening cutscene to the very end. One parrot demands the rum, then the blue parrot tips the barrel over its head and lets out a sheepish “Sorry, guys…”. I find that few studios dare this kind of tenderness in a money product, and that is exactly what makes ELK games more than token dispensers.

Nitro Reels and their 85 million ways to win

Nitropolis, launched on 3 November 2020, sent ELK into overdrive. On its grid of 6 reels and 4 rows, a Nitro Reel is a special reel that takes up two positions and holds 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12 identical symbols. Ways to win are all the combinations that pay from reel to reel, starting from the left. According to the game rules, they climb as high as 85,155,840.

Compared with the best-known variable ways mechanic, the figure is dizzying. A standard Megaways grid, where each reel changes height on every spin, tops out at 117,649 ways. The Nitropolis franchise then grew into an ensemble series, with four clans brought together in 2024 under the Battle of Nitropolis banner.

Volatility modes to choose from

Wild Toro 3, released on 25 May 2026, takes ELK's menu logic one step further. Volatility measures how uneven the wins are, rare and big when it is high, frequent and modest when it is low. Here, a sun and moon switch flips the game between a normal-volatility Day and a high-volatility Night. According to the game rules, the RTP stays the same in both modes.

The Midnight Bullfight feature, where giant multiplier muletas cover up to five reels, only triggers at night. I like the idea, because it makes explicit what other games hide in their maths.

Tournaments built into every game

ELK Compete is the tournament tool the studio offers casinos on all its games, with no extra development needed. Launched in late January 2019, on the eve of ICE in London, it shows a live leaderboard and stages point milestones, podium places and big wins. Seasonal skins accompany Easter, Oktoberfest, Halloween and Christmas. The casino chooses the game, the minimum bet, the duration and the objectives. Four automatic betting strategies

The engine shared by ELK games includes a little-known feature, betting strategies that adjust the stake on their own during Auto Spin. Design consultancy Liquid & Grit already described them in 2018 on Kaiju. I have not seen them enabled in the public demos, but the engine's translation files still describe them in detail.

• Jumper: the bet goes up one level after each winning round, up to four levels above the base bet, and returns to the base after a loss.
• Leveller: the bet climbs two levels after five consecutive losses.
• Booster: the bet goes up one level after each loss, up to four levels, and returns to the base after a win.
• Optimizer: the bet follows a chosen percentage of your balance.

The game rules spell it out: a betting strategy does not change the theoretical return. Booster is the old martingale in a tuxedo, and all it does is drain a budget faster after a losing streak.

Fortunately, the engine also provides safeguards. A session reminder can pop up every 15, 30, 45 or 60 minutes, and a bonus in progress can be saved for up to 12 hours. Before switching anything on at an operator, reread my responsible gambling guidelines and set the maximum amount you are willing to lose. Regulated casinos add their own tools, starting with deposit limits.

What the demo tells you about RTP

RTP, or return to player, is the share of stakes paid back on average over a very large number of spins. According to the Kynox Casino survey of 156 ELK Studios demos, almost 49% of the games are set at 94.0%, 12% at 95.0% and 16% at 96.0%. About 22%, mostly older titles, go from 96.1% to 96.4%. Recent releases often return to 96.0%, such as Pirots 5 or Grizzly Stampede, while Wild Toro 3 and Boomberries stay at 94.0%.

Hit frequency is another useful guide, showing the share of spins that return something. Its median stands at 24% across the 156 demos, from a low of 12.8% for Knockout Diamonds to a high of 40.5% for Electric SAM. The data sheets of several titles also rate volatility out of 10, with 6 for Wild Toro and 8 for Cygnus, Nitropolis and Pirots 2. Almost every demo accepts bets from €0.20 to €100 per spin.

This rate is not fixed odds. The Pirots 2 data sheet shows only one value, 94.0%. Yet the rules text contains a field that the server fills in when the game launches, so the figure shown at your operator is the one that counts. Open the rules tab before your first bet and compare it with the demo. Over 1,000 spins at €1, a two-point gap means €20 less in theoretical return.

Up to 28 languages in the latest demos

English is the default language of ELK's demo server, and the studio has added many others over the years. The files behind Pirots 5 cover 33 language variants, or 28 languages from Swedish to Japanese, with separate UK and US English. Older titles carry fewer, such as the 27 variants of Wild Toro. My verdict on ELK Studios

Should a 94% return be forgiven when the studio tells such good stories? I have no definitive answer, and that doubt sums ELK up quite well. Few providers can be recognised blind, three seconds into a cutscene, and ELK is one of them.

The numbers hesitate as much as I do. Almost one demo in two runs at 94.0%, while some 2026 titles climb back to 96.0%. The most expensive X-iter modes have gone from 300 to 500 times the stake since 2021, even as the latest releases come back down to 250. Booster, finally, flirts with exactly what regulators are trying to rein in.

CollectR renewed the grammar of the slot machine. X-iter established the idea of a menu of modes, and Nitropolis proved that a clan war could be told through reels. Compliance keeps pace, from Great Britain to Ontario. The About page, for its part, promises “quality over quantity”. Yet 24 releases in 2025, a footer frozen on a 2020 copyright and an Oxygen 3 announcement dressed in Deadcode's text betray a studio in a hurry.

The next chapter is already being written, with Propaganda 2 and a second Huff N' Puff CollectR, and Light & Wonder's backing could open more American states.
