He had to intercept it just before it reached its destination, otherwise there would be no way to make off with the loot. He had prepared well and was sure that it would work. Everything was planned, the hideout, the plan, two acolytes would help him and of course they would share the money bags.
But that was without counting the brave sheriff and his friend the Marshall. They were suspicious of people they didn't know and these three didn't give them a good impression. They had decided to follow them discreetly, but they wanted to know for sure. They had not left them unattended for a moment. They kept a watch so as not to miss them, but without our three outlaws noticing.
The next morning, as if nothing had happened, our three fellows went to the town saloon for a whisky. The bartender realized right away that something was wrong with the three of them. The sheriff told him to buy them drinks until they passed out. And of course they weren't going to refuse free drinks!
After a while and a bottle each they start to talk and reveal their plans. But that's when the Sheriff and Marshall (as in Tombstone™), take them prisoner and lock them in the jail. Once they sober up they go straight to the stagecoach not to get the bags of gold but go straight to the state prison.
